Bread Line

Programs

We are so grateful for your support!

Everything that the Bread Line accomplishes is made possible by the generous donors & volunteers of our community. Alaskans who share their resources, time & heart make all our programs possible.

The food, supplies, money & time given by our neighbors allow us to meet our mission of feeding people & affirming lives.

Every year, hundreds of Alaskans step up to help here – from heavy hitting professional organizations to the littlest Girl Scouts, major foundations to local penny drives – everything helps.

Fairbanks is called the “Golden Heart City” because people like you care. Thank you.

Give

The Bread Line is a nonprofit that thrives through the support of the Fairbanks community. Donations make all of the Bread Line’s anti-hunger work possible.

Stone's Throw

Stone’s Throw is a free culinary job training program that empowers people overcoming challenges to change their lives through job readiness training & skills development opportunities.

Stone’s Throw has two annual programs:

In the fall, a four-week baking skills program &, in spring, an eight-week culinary job training program. Both programs are all-day intensives that teach both “hard” & “soft” professional skills.

Stone’s Throw is supported by the Alaska Mental Health Trust, the Rasmuson Foundation, Tanana Chiefs Conference, the Department of Labor, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation & the Literacy Council of Alaska.

Teaching Critical Success Skills

Stone’s Throw recognizes that education is critical to career development. The program focuses on culinary technical skills, food safety training & life skills such as interpersonal interaction & coachability, which are necessary for success in the workforce.

Along with the technical skills of success, Stone’s Throw teaches “soft skills” essential to finding & maintaining employment.

Stone Soup Garden

The Stone Soup Community Garden is a project to provide the best possible fresh & local food to people experiencing food insecurity in downtown Fairbanks.

The garden’s first season, in 2015, harvested over 500 pounds of produce. The following year, harvest more than tripled! Ever since, the Stone Soup Community Garden has been growing & changing to meet need where it was at. Our garden now dedicates beds to an “eating garden” so hungry people can pick produce right at the source.

Over the years, we have been able to partner with the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels & ThrivAlaska as well as several local assisted living facilities to donate fresh, locally grown produce to those in need.

People Coming Together

The Stone Soup Garden at 12th & Lacey happened much like the Stone Soup story: people recognized a need & came together. The Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Foundation made the garden space available, donations from supporters & hands-on work from our incredible volunteers, the Stone Soup Garden became a reality.

Our gratitude goes out to EVERYONE who makes this possible: the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Foundation who generously donates the land, all the local farms & nurseries who donate plants (Calypso Farm, Bender Mountain Farm, Holmtown, Risse Greenhouse & the annual Fairbanks Hospice Plant Sale); The Folk School, who have built many beautiful raised beds, all the individual Fairbanksans who donate seeds, starts & time; the Fairbanks Water Company for donating the water to keep the garden growing so beautifully & EVERYONE else.

As Helen Keller wisely said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Together, we’re growing a better tomorrow at the Stone Soup Community Garden.

Volunteers & Donations are Always Needed

The success of Stone Soup Garden depends on volunteers like you helping with planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing & harvesting. Roots to greens, commUNITY is what makes our garden grow. We rely on donations of soil, fertilizer, starters & materials for raised beds.

Planting Day is the first Saturday in June & the last harvest is complete by early October. Every day in between could use your green thumbs.
